1990. Ten years after Independence. We came to do a piece for Channel 4 on the progress made. Although Mugabe had publicly abandoned the idea of a one party state, that was the issue that concerned everyone.

The cameraman refused to point his camera at the ZANU-PF headquarters or set up anywhere near the CIO building. In an interview with an MP critical of Mugabe he even failed to turn on his camera.

There were stories of farms appropriated and left to rot with fruit unpicked. Ex-Veterans on co-operative farms complained of receiving seed but no instructions as to when or how to sow it or equipment to do so .

With hindsight what was to follow in the next 20 years had already begun.
